About Us

Hindustan Steel Workers’ Union (HSWU) in Durgapur Steel Plant was registered in the office of Registrar of Trade Unions, West Bengal on 25th August, 1959 having Registration No. 4692. The main objectives of the Union are :

       a)  Strive to improve and ameliorate the conditions of its members and to safe guard their interest by negotiation with their employer.
       b)  Undertake or prosecution or defense of any legal proceedings to which any of its members may be a party for the purpose of protecting the rights of                  the members arising out of his relation with the employer.
       c)  Conduct a trade dispute of behalf of a member.
       d)  Compensate a member for loss arising out of a trade dispute.
       e)  Pay allowance to a member or his dependents on account of death, old age, sickness, accidents or unemployment of the member.
       f)   Issue or undertake liabilities under policies of assurance on the life of a member or policies insuring a member against sickness, accidents or                          unemployment.

Since inception, this Union was led by the eminent personalities Late Ananda Gopal Mukherjee and Late Labanya Gopal Ghatak till 90’s. At the time of its formation, the HSWU was the only registered Trade Union in Durgapur Steel Plant. HSWU got affiliation of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) on 9th November, 1960 vide Affiliation No. 2541.

 

After constitution of National Joint Committee for the Steel Industry (NJCS) in the year 1969 for the purpose of settlement of wage structure and other facilities for the workers working in Steel Industries in India, the HSWU has been participating in all the wage negotiations and reached wage agreements since 1970 till date. Since formation of the NJCS, eight Wage Agreements were signed. HSWU is a constituent member of the Bargaining Council in Durgapur Steel Plant.

 

The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) or Rashtriya Mazdoor Congress was constituted on 3rd May, 1947 under the Presidentship of India’s Iron man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi. The affiliated units of INTUC is spread over all the States and Union Territories of our Country having a total membership of about ONE CRORE.
